Non-structural artistic installations in an urban environemt:

I have used a version of Rammed Earth specifically for installations within institutional and artistic contexts. I have relied on dirt available in the urban environment that is easily transported into indoor settings – namely, Miracle Gro™ Potting Mix. This is mixed in a commercial cement mixer with 10-20% portland cement and an amount of cement colorant if necessary. This mixture is placed and rammed in layers just like structural rammed earth. The peat, fertilizers and other additives in Potting mix will give off a strong somewhat ammoniac odor. It is a good idea to place plastic sheeting on the floor under the piece and well beyond the its footprint as liquid will ooze out under the preasure of ramming. After 24-48hrs the form can be demolded.
